So the quickly lube obliterated the filter and it puked oil. Had I not had to make an unscheduled pitstop nearby, I might have blown up the engine.

I had a friend that did blow a 3.8 in his impala. quick lube installed so damn tight the gasket deformed and puked oil out. Of course he didnt know to stop when a red light comes on on the dash, so he pounded it out into oblivion. I put a new motor in it for him years ago now, still waiting for my return favor. I also told him he had to wash his car once a month so it lasts if I put the motor in. Shit dirty as anything still. Asshole

What do you mean by "obliterated?" That's why, when I go to the quickie lube, I always stand outside the bay and watch them work. I had a friend who worked at one and one of his coworkers forgot to refill a car with oil. That customer DID end up with a siezed engine.

The thing about paying to have it done isn't that it guarantees no-one will screw it up, but that if it does get screwed-up, there's someone else who has pay for it.

Ouch.
But the filter had a hell of a pinched dent on the side to where (why?) and leaked right from the tilted part of the gasket against the block.
The filter is garbage. The filter I use on my Tercels have a nice fatty gasket. This had a thin strip of rubber.

If I had a dollar for every time I've had a car come in on the hook from or as a result of a quick-lube, I'd have several dollars.

Story time:
I used to work at a quick lube. Actually it was called Kwiky Lube.
List of oopsies I can remember:
Double-gasketed a filter on a CVPI belonging to the WI State Patrol. Was able to flag him down and he puked oil all the way back to the shop.
Got a crew cab long bed Silverado stuck on the curb in the snow trying to negotiate our tight parking lot. Got angry stares as I gave the owner the keys back. Apparently his loud exhaust gave away my off-road excursion.
Another employee forgot to tighten a drain plug. I had to drive across town with a new plug, filter, 5qts of oil, and a bag of oil dry to fix/clean up the mess.
Was bad at driving stick and almost dropped a CJ Jeep into the pit by going too fast. I blame its high idle.
Refused to work on a Previa because there was a deer leg stuck in the undercarriage. Owner states "Yeah I ran over a dead deer last week."
Got my foot run over by a Neon. Calmly asked the customer (whom we allow to drive in themselves) "Can you please pull forward a bit more?"
Moved a friend of an employee's car who had parked in customer parking, only to find she had NO BRAKES in her Eclipse. Car promptly bounced over a curb and into the bushes. Thankfully not into the highway. But its okay I got to see her boobs.
Spent many days contact buzzed because half of the employees would smoke weed while on the job.
Got to change oil on a DeLorean (license plate: SW1NGER) and many limos. Greasing those long rear driveshaft u-joints is NOT FUN.
We serviced 99 cars on the last day of business in 1999. I shit you not.
But in all my time there we NEVER had to buy an engine or pay for any major repair.
Things I wasn't there for:
Employee reached into a LeBaron to start the engine, forgetting it was a manual. Bad clutch switch allowed it to start and it ran out the shop, over a curb, and down into a ravine.

I know someone who had a similar story from jiffy lube with their old Grand Cherokee. However, he didn't notice until after a mile of driving. He had it towed back, where they filled it up with oil. That was pretty early on in the engine's life. It made it to 200,000 miles before he got rid of it.
Those 4.0 I6s are tough engines.

So they over-torqued the filter and damaged it? Wow. Either that, or knowingly used a damaged filter and said, "Eh, it'll probably be okay."

A friend asked me to show him how to change his oil so he could save the $45 he was paying the Firestone dealer. I pulled the drain plug and the threads were bent over from over tightening. We went to the Firestone shop to complain on our way to the NAPA place to get a new plug. The manager at Firestone opened a locker and there were boxes of new drain plugs. Apparently they do that on a regular basis.

We just fired a guy here that would "tighten drain plugs till they pop".
He drove a Civic with a fart can and Monster Tach. Yes it was auto.

ok. So I work at an oil change place. Right now I'm the bottom grease monkey, down in the pit.
What the hell? If we drop an oil filter it doesn't get used. They get hand tightened. Trust me I'm not strong enough to over tighten them. (Small hands even for a woman) Every filter we pull off we have to double check the gasket is removed and call out to topside. We have other checks for other parts of the process to keep us from screwing up.
On the other hand, it's not a chain where I work and I was trained by the owner.
Did they actually replace the filter? They didn't take the old one off and realize they were out of the correct filter then put it back on, did they? Sometimes they get pretty squished up taking them off.

They replaced the filter. With a shitty one. This brand seems to really skimp on the whole gasket idea.

That's what I think happened. But the guy could have been having a bad day. I had the opportunity to tear him a new one but he did come out to fix it and then I brought it back for reinspection and for them to clean everything off. Being an asshole does not really ever work anyway. I was really really really unhappy though.

Oil looked good. Can't you see how shiny it is on the pavement? :) At this point I'd rather not think about it. I want to change my own oil. I can do it in 10 minutes for equal cost, but it is a company vehicle so they want a paper trail for maintenance and repairs. But this debacle cost me three hours of my day.

Went to a quick lube once many years ago, and never again. Long story short, they filled up the oil (note I did not say they drained the oil), and drain the transmission fluid then gave me the car. 8 miles later (surprised it took that long.), transmission blew up. :) happy times.

Maybe they used an adjustable wrench of some sort the pinched the filter as they turned it. Someone forgot how to use the right tool, or at least their hand?
